Whilst there are strong arguments on why e-books are a great investment (for one they equal more suitcase space) it seems that the power of print is not going anywhere.

  1. Around 180,000 new and revised books are published in the UK each year.
  2. The first novel written on a typewriter is said to be Mark Twain’s Adventures Of Tom Sawyer.
  3. The best-selling book of all time is Don Quixote which has sold over 500 million copies and was first published in Spanish
  4. The longest title of a book consists of 11,284 characters (woah!) which is far too long to insert here but if you’re really interested click here.
  5. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice was initially rejected by publishers and left unpublished for 15 years. It wasn’t until the success of Sense and Sensibility in 1811 that Jane was able to publish her first literary work.
  6. There is a word for the act of smelling books ‘bibliosmia’ and it’s actually pretty common.
  7. According to The Oxford English Dictionary the first use of the word ‘dustbin’ is credited to Charles Dickens.
  8. In the French edition of Harry Potter, Voldemort’s middle name is Elvis. The change was necessary so that his full name – Tom Elvis Jedusor – would become an anagram of “je suis Voldemort”.
  9. The Japanese word ‘tsundoku’ means ‘buying a load of books and then not getting round to reading them’.
  10. Up to 50 books can be made from 1 tree.
  11. The Neverending Story not only ends but is estimated to be only around 96,000 words. It was also written by Michael Ende.
