The Retail Mutual is dedicated to providing an alternative to conventional insurance for the independent retail community. We exist to help give you peace of mind and are passionate about protecting the independent retail businesses on our high streets.
We began life in 1999 as The NFRN Mutual providing cover to independent news retailers and have been proudly supporting our Members for 19 years. As the retail landscape has evolved, so too has the Mutual. Today we are able to serve the entire independent retail community; pubs, post offices, confectioners, clothes shops, farm shops, florists and many more in between. We became The Retail Mutual in 2017 to reflect the changing nature of our Membership.
We are dedicated to meeting both the current and future needs of our Members, continuing to grow, innovate and introduce new products and services in pursuit of our mission to become a one-stop-shop for the diverse cover needs of the UK’s independent retail community.

Real retailers are the reason behind The Retail Mutual; real people, running real businesses, overcoming similar challenges, sharing their experiences and celebrating each-others’ success.
Even our Board of Directors are Members of the Mutual themselves and all have first-hand experience of working within the retail sector.

Under Age Sales is a social enterprise that specialises in helping retailers prevent sales of restricted products to minors, and assists them in achieving compliance. It provides staff training, point-of-sale materials, compliance advice and advice for compliance planograms with all of your legal compliance set out.
Under Age Sales provides nationally recognised training and is an Edexcel accredited centre. Staff training is an essential element of establishing a system of due diligence to prevent underage sales. It may also help retailers to avoid prosecution or licensing sanctions should a member of staff fail a test purchase.
Save The High Street is a coordinated, industry-wide movement to support and empower every local shopkeeper nationwide, accelerating the whole high street’s transition to a better connected, digitally enabled and more sustainable high street.

Membership is free and provides you with access to reports, insights and recommendations on what is working best on our high streets.
