As a Mutual you won’t find us on comparison sites.

The Retail Mutual was created over 20 years ago when a group of news and convenience store owners joined forces to create their very own mutual as an alternative to insurance companies, to provide them with the specific type of cover they needed as busy high-street retailers.

Since then, The Retail Mutual has used its years of extensive experience and knowledge to perfect a range of business cover solutions for over 100 different trade types. We offer all the benefits of being part of a self-sufficient discretionary mutual, while reflecting the fundamentals of insurance, such as offering support, security, peace of mind and financial protection for you, your employees and your business.

Being part of Discretionary Mutual

When you take our cover, you become a Member and pay a contribution to the Mutual fund.

If you or another Member have to make a claim, the contributions in the Mutual’s funds are used to cover the cost of the claim.

Sometimes a claim falls outside the agreed cover limits or agreed terms. Usually this  means the claim will be rejected but in the case of a discretionary mutual, this decision can be appealed to the Claims Committee.

The Claims Committee acts on behalf of all the Mutual Members. The Committee considers everything when making their decision. They can decide to pay the claim or uphold the original claim decision.

Discretionary Mutual Model

To us, you’re not just another customer; when you take out cover with us you become a Member of The Retail Mutual and join our supportive independent business community. Your financial contribution supports other businesses needing to claim for accidents or unforeseen events, and in the same way their contribution helps you in your time of need. Unlike insurance providers, at The Retail Mutual we offer discretionary cover, which means we can take a slightly different approach when it comes to claims handling.
